Cambridge is a city in the southern end of the Waterloo Region with a population of over 169,000 people. It sits where the Grand River and Speed River meet, about 30 minutes west of the GTA by Highway 401. The city is made up of three main communities, Galt, Preston, and Hespeler, each with its own history and character.
Cambridge has been growing steadily over the past several years with new residential developments, businesses, and infrastructure investment. It offers a mix of small-town feel and city-level amenities, which has made it increasingly popular with buyers from across the region and the GTA.
Galt is the largest of the three communities and the historic centre of Cambridge. Downtown Galt sits along the Grand River with shops, restaurants, and heritage stone buildings. Housing ranges from century homes near the core to newer builds in south Galt. The area has a strong sense of community and is one of the most recognizable parts of the city.
Preston has a quieter, more residential feel. It is well-known for its green space, particularly along the Speed River. Mill Race Park is one of the most popular spots in the city. Housing is a mix of established neighbourhoods with mature trees and newer developments on the edges. The community has its own schools, shops, and recreation facilities.
Hespeler is the smallest of the three communities but has seen the most growth in recent years. The village core along Queen Street has a small-town charm, while the surrounding areas have newer subdivisions with larger homes and modern layouts. Hespeler is close to the 401, making it a good option for anyone who commutes.
Cambridge has a strong selection of schools across both the Waterloo Region District School Board and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. Well-known secondary schools include Galt Collegiate Institute, Jacob Hespeler Secondary School, St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, and Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School. Elementary options are spread across all three communities, and most neighbourhoods have schools within walking distance or a short drive.
The Grand River is the centrepiece of outdoor life in Cambridge. Trails run along both sides of the river through Galt, connecting parks, conservation areas, and neighbourhoods. Shade's Mills Conservation Area on the south side of the city offers swimming, fishing, hiking, and camping. Mill Race Park in Preston is a popular family spot with trails and green space along the Speed River. The city has multiple community centres with programs for kids and families year-round, along with sports leagues, pools, and arenas across all three communities.
Highway 401 runs along the south end of Cambridge and is the main route to the GTA. Highway 8 connects Cambridge to Kitchener, and the drive between the two cities is about 15 to 20 minutes. Grand River Transit runs bus routes across the city, although most residents rely on a car for day-to-day life. The region's ION light rail currently runs between Kitchener and Waterloo, with a planned extension to Cambridge in the future.
